Dear valued patients and customers of Hogarth’s Clinic Pharmacy
At Hogarth’s Clinic Pharmacy we’ve always been the Biggest Little Drug Store in Town, but we are not naïve to the dangers of the outside world. So, we have always taken the appropriate actions to protect and secure your personal and private information that is stored on our computer system. Like any large business we employ a reputable computer hardware support company to install and monitor protective measures such as firewalls, anti-virus scanning and anti-malware. But criminals can be one step ahead of the good guys. If that happens, detecting the virus, isolating it, removing it, repairing any damage and restoring from safe secure back up needs to happen quickly.
Despite all reasonable efforts, I regret to inform you that Hogarth’s Clinic Pharmacy was recently a victim of Ransomware. Ransomware is a type of computer virus that encrypts the files on your computer such that they are unusable until a ransom is paid to the nefarious party. A ransomware virus was discovered July 21 and again August 2, 2022. Within minutes of its discovery our computer support team was able to identify, isolate and remove the virus. Unfortunately, the virus did damage the operating system and database. By design, Hogarth’s has a physical backup of all our operating system onsite as well as on the cloud. Within 24 hours of the July 21 attack a clean restoration of our back up had us back in operation. Within 8 hours of the August 2, 2022 attack a clean restoration of our back up had us back in operation.
While there is no evidence of any data, personal or technical, leaving our network; our technical team advises that we can not be absolutely sure. At Hogarth’s, we value our customers and patient’s trust and confidence more than anything else, so we are taking the precaution of advising our patients of this possible breach of security. If you have stored credit card information with Hogarth’s, we are advising patients to put a hold on their card and have it replaced immediately. Please report any unusual use of your personal or financial information to
Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia
PO Box 9038 Stn. Prov. Govt. Victoria B.C. V8W 9A4 1-(800) 663-7867
A report has been filed with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner, the BC College of Pharmacists and the RCMP (File #2022-13778).
Hogarth’s will be even more vigilant moving forward by implementing an Enhanced Security Service that will have more robust Anti-virus, Anti-Malware, Anti-Spamware and two factor authentication. These improved tools will allow for better detection, isolation and removal but also logging and tracing of Viruses and Malware. Enhanced security will also involve training for staff and store operating policy development.
Please accept our deepest and most sincere apology for this possible breach of privacy. We hope the changes that we have implemented will provide comfort and assurance that Hogarth’s is taking the necessary steps to ensure that our systems are secure.
Thank you kindly
